Squeaky sandals can be annoying. Learn the common causes—from water trapped under the sole to debris—and simple fixes to silence your KEENs.

Quick answer

Squeaky sandals usually mean trapped water, debris, or friction between the sole and footbed. You can often fix it yourself with drying, cleaning, or a simple lubricant.

Why sandals squeak: the usual suspects

Water is the most common culprit. When moisture gets trapped between the outsole and the footbed (or between the footbed and your foot), it creates a thin film that rubs and squeaks with every step. This is especially common with hybrid water sandals like the KEEN Newport H2, which are designed to be worn in and out of water.

Dry squeaks often come from friction: a rubber sole rubbing against a smooth footbed, or a strap rubbing against the sandal's lining. Dirt, sand, or small pebbles can also lodge under the footbed and cause noise.

When to try a fix vs. when to replace

Most squeaks are fixable at home with no tools. But if the noise comes from a loose or broken strap attachment, or if the sole is separating from the footbed, the sandal may need professional repair or replacement. A persistent squeak after drying and cleaning could indicate a delaminating sole—especially in older sandals.

Diagnose and fix your squeaky sandals

  • Symptom: Squeak when walking on dry surfaces: Check the bottom of the footbed for moisture or debris. Remove the insole (if removable) and dry both the footbed and the inside of the sandal with a towel. Let them air out for 24 hours. If the squeak stops after drying, the cause was trapped water. If it continues, move to the next step.
  • Symptom: Squeak after wearing in wet conditions: Rinse the sandals thoroughly with fresh water to remove salt or sand. Remove any removable insoles and let everything dry completely away from direct heat. For stubborn squeaks, apply a tiny amount of silicone lubricant (like a dry lubricant for bike chains) to the contact points between the sole and footbed. If the squeak persists after drying and lubricating, the issue may be friction between the footbed and your foot—try wearing thin socks.
  • Symptom: Squeak from the strap or buckle area: Check for dirt or sand lodged in the strap slots or buckle. Rinse the sandal and dry it. If the strap is rubbing against the lining, apply a small amount of talcum powder or beeswax to the friction point. If the strap attachment is loose or the buckle is damaged, the sandal may need a repair kit or replacement—stop trying lubricants.
